2011 Governors Arts Awards
Distinguished Arts Leadership
Award Recipient: Connie Rosemont, Red River Theatres, Concord
Although it is an unusual circumstance, in 2011, the Distinguished Arts Leadership Award was presented to two deserving recipients. The exceptional quality of the programs they direct, their remarkable success in growing audiences for the arts, their contributions to the creative economy in New Hampshire, and their reputations as talented and visionary leaders are all qualities that make Connie Rosemont and Ben Anderson models of leadership in the arts.
Connie Rosemont was instrumental in the very early phases of Red River Theatres when a small group of people first envisioned an independent theatre for central New Hampshire. As Executive Director, Connie has taken the reins of this brand new organization and shaped the dream into a reality. Today, Red River Theatres is a prominent organization that showcases the artistry of independent films, serves as gathering place for people of all walks of life and backgrounds and is helping to bring prosperity to Concord.
Connie’s leadership has been marked by innovation and community building. A current project is to facilitate the filming of oral histories for newly arrived refugees from Bhutan and a community gallery provides a venue for the work of local artists. Connie’s staff summarizes her unique gifts as: Her ability to personally work “with individuals and groups who approach theatres with programming ideas; and her rare ability to connect people with hugely divergent interests, making it possible for Red River Theatres to be responsive, inclusive, and, as one visiting filmmaker put it last May, ‘a New Hampshire treasure’.”
